Veritas Press History – Explorers to 1815
Posted By Melissa on March 19, 2010
This post is part 6 of a series that began with a quick look through our Homeschool Bookshelves. Click on the homeschooling category to see the rest.
We use Veritas Press for our history lessons. The wonderful book suggestions are what first drew me to Veritas. Sam and Matt do a lot of reading (not in textbooks) with this program. There are 5 years of history for the elementary ages. Samantha is currently in the 4th year which is Explorers to 1815.
She has all her work in 2 notebooks. She put the chart on the front to help her keep track of where she is.
Each week she reads a card that has the main events about that topic, does a worksheet, a project, maps the event, does additional reading on the subject, and then has a review test at the end of the week. She has everything separated by dividers so she can find her week easily.
On each divider I have written books (from Veritas’s catalog) that go along with that card.
Those books are on my homeschool shelves and are in alphabetical order and easy for her to find.
She’s really enjoying this year’s selections – they’re exciting and full of action!
What do you use for history? What do you love about it?

Cool!!!
Mystery of History.
I love that the kids and I can do the lessons together. History is great for getting the four of us together to sit down and learn what happened way back when.
VP sounds great!
I really like how you organized your shelves. Bravo! Wish I had done something like that. Mine are now older – one in college and one now applying, so our bookshelves are thinning down and the history is not as fun any more.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. I’m now following you on Twitter. You are doing an awesome job – both blog and family. Keep up the good work.

ps- love, love, LOVE your family photos!
That looks like a great set up!
After years of looking at various history curriculums, I’ve kind of made up my own borrowing what I like best from various sources (Diana Waring, the Well Trained Mind, various ‘great books’ type curriculums). I work chronologically and read aloud a lot and supplement with a lot of great books, projects, lap books etc… History is my first love, in terms of subjects, so I’m happy to put in extra work here.
Oh my! Your homeschool shelves look so organized!!! I would be plain embarrassed if I took a picture of mine right now. In my heart, my shelves look like yours…but in reality, they do not. Sigh.
My daughter’s homeschool academy chose…and we are using The Story of the World. I am LOVING it! We have never studied history chronologically like this–and worldwide. I have learned so much reading it together. I’m always disappointed when she reads her assignments without me.
Great selection of books! I’m still organizing my shelves. I can’t quite decide what I want to do with them. I’m thinking I need another one. HAHA!!!
